I think there is something different in being a "friend of sinners" and a friend "to" sinners. Often we interpret Jesus being a friend of sinners, to mean that we are supposed to be a friend to sinners. As a friend "of" sinners, the sinners were the ones that saw Jesus as a friend. The true test is not whether or not we like sinners, but rather do sinners like us. I love the fact that the most disreputable people of Jesus' day loved to be near him. Oh that we might have THAT kind of impact on people around us.
